But one has to take care in the present situation
- that the technological development of Remote Sensing does not
lose contact with the actual needs of those who use it, and
- that new methods of Remote Sensing which are not ready yet
to be used in practice are subject to premature promotion
and uncritical usage.
As a result of these facts we have to state
- that there is still a wide field of research open to us,
both in basic research and in the development of operational
methods of application in the various fields.
This Symposium is designed to examine the methods for the
evaluation of Remote Sensing data, especially their value and
their informational content for specific purposes.
The announced reports show that the value of the intepretation
of remote sensing data for the solution of many problems cannot
be ignored. The new methods of remote sensing from space, non-
photographic sensors and computer-aided evaluation systems have
not displaced the classical methods but they made it possible
to apply remote sensing to new fields and to find answers for
many important, world-wide problems.
Thus our discussion program here in Freiburg has been formed by
demands for information in many different ways. This will be a
very busy but certainly also a very interesting week. Please,
take advantage of the possibility to exchange thoughts and ideas.
Also - do use the opportunity to turn these days in Freiburg
into a week of international friendship. And finally I would
like to recommend to enjoy the charm of our city and of the
southwestern landscape of Germany. Despite all your work I wish
you happy and agreeable days.
JEAN CRUSET, PRESIDENT OF THE ISP:
Mr. Counsellor, representing the Federal Ministry of Research;
Mr. Representative of the International Union of Forestry Research
Organizations;
Mr. President of the ISP Commission VII;
Ladies and Gentlemen,
As wished by the organizers of this Symposium and needed by the
allotment of time, I shall deliver a very short address:
- To congratulate Prof.Gerd Hildebrandt and his staff for the
continuous and efficient way they have worked to make this
one week meeting a real success; this excellent job is a
token which gives us the best hopes that the sessions of
Commission VII, at the Hamburg Congress, in 1980, will be of
a high interest;
- To recall our friend Gottfried Konecny the Congress Director,
how it is wishable that a large room be left at the disposal
of the Commission VII officers and to ask the latter to hold
there as many informal meetings they like, to make these
meetings an actual congress of remote sensing, inside the
ISP Congress itself;
