1. Introduction
It is possible to perceive a clear delay between the development of
remote sensing techniques and their application in physical planning,
altourh this delay is not equally long in each country (LENCO, 1977).
The user (in this case the planner) is most interested in operational
techniques, but, in contrast to accounts of experiments of which there are
many, there are few publications on this aspect.
Both these considerations, together with this symposium as a stimula-
ting factor, led to the setting up of a survey using a questionnaire, into
ihe operational usage of aerial photography in physical planning in the
hetherlands. The modern remote sensing techniques are not excluded from this
paper from the outset, but apart from a few ongoing experiments they have
not been applied (DE BRUUN, 1978).
Before discussing the setting up of the research, and the results, a
brief description is given of the structure of physical planning in the
Netherlands.
2. Physical planning in the Netherlands
In the Netherlands, physical planning is principally carried out at
the three administrative levels: national, provincial and local as shown in
figure 1 (BRUSSAARD, 1974).
