Although this paper has concentrated on the applications of the USGS land use
and land cover maps and data by various levels of government, some brief men-
tion should be made of uses of these products in the private sector. One
of the private uses most common after release of the first maps (in the Ozarks
region) was their use by the number of real estate development companies in
the region. These companies found the maps well-suited to planning and ac-
quiring tracts of land for second-home development in the high recreation
potential areas of the Ozarks. |t has also become apparent that many private
engineering and consulting companies are purchasing the maps for use in ful- Nati
filling contract requirements, including those contracts sublet in fulfillment
of State and Federal planning and land management programs.
One type of application which is sure to increase in its magnitude is the use
of such data by private research companies which need land use data for certain
industrial or development purposes. One example of this is the H.R.B. Singer/
Link Division application of the data in a video display system on board a
.flight simulator. Program
These brief examples of applications only scratch the surface of the extent Project
to which the USGS land use and land cover maps and data could be applied. Based of remo
on the rate and variety of applications which have occurred in the few years since
the initiation of the program, we can expect to see many more applications, as
well as a great diversity of applications as more States and regions, and finally,
the Nation, are completely mapped. Other applications will surely follow as data
on land use and land cover change are incorporated into the program.
