During the second half of 1978 requirements from other end
users than the Swedish CoastGuard can also be included in
the radar design. A longer production run will naturally be
an effective way to reduce costs even further. The present
cost per unit is estimated as well below $ 100 000.-.
3. SOME EXAMPLES OF RADAR IMAGES FROM ERICSSON SLAR
Ericsson SLAR uses a standard TV monitor to display the
received radar images. A radar map of an area 20 km x 20 km
is shown on the screen and this map rolls from top to bottom
as the aircraft flies along. Thus the upper part of the TV
picture always represents what is at present on the right
side.of the aircraft while the lower part represents areas
flown by some 3 - 4 minutes ago. Figure 2 shows a part of
the archipelago outside Stockholm recorded by the SLAR.
The aircraft position on this map is in the upper left corner.
Mixed into the TV video is navigational information, time,
data and other data describing the test flight. Exactly the
same information is also recorded on all photos taken from
the aircraft to facilitate the coordination between SLAR-
and ordinary pictures.
