Over land a SLAR with somewhat better resolution than the 
75 m x 75 m obtainable with Ericsson SLAR would be preferable 
for most applications. Figure 6 shows an example of radar 
mapping with this moderate resolution. 
A SLAR is an excellent sensor for coastal surveillance since 
not only oil spills and sea ice but also islands and ships 
show up on the radar picture. 
crafts are readily detected at ranges of 10 km and more. 
Larger ships can be detected out to about 100 km provided 
that the aircraft flies high enough.
