Due to these very limited application possibilities this technique is
not further treated here.
8,Cost of remote seneinz imagery
8.1 Introduction
The cost of imagery made from an aircraft has been composed of the
following three components:
- cost. of mobilisation, which is the cost involved in flying the aircraft
with the required equipment to the area of which the imagery has to be
made
— cost of flight, which depends on the size of the area to be covered and
the required scale and overlap percentage of the imagery
— cost of image processing, which may include geometrical correction,
development of films and printing of positive or diapositive copies.
Imagery from satellites is too costly to be specially made for à specific
project. Satellite MSS (Landsat) imagery and photography (Skylab) can be
bought at fixed prices per frame, but specifications of scale, overlap,
spectral and temporal resolution cannot be adapted to ihe specific
requirements of a project.
Cost of terrestrial photography mainly depends on the time, necessary to
take the photographs, which is again determined by the size of the area
to be covered and the accessibility of the terrain.
8.2 Cost of photography
For aerial photography the cost of mobilisation is usually relatively low,
provided appropriate aircraft and cameras are locally available.
Climatological conditions (standby time), as well as the size of the
area to be flown, influence the price per unit of covered area. However,
for areas of a size larger than 1000 ne flying cost of the order of
5-10 US $/kn* for scales between 1:20,000 and 1:10,000 may serve as an
indication. For detailed photography of larger scales in à smaller area
the mobilisation cost will raise the price per km“ considerably.
Of those areas, where already photography of an appropriate scale is
available, black and white prints or diapositives usually cost from
