Spacelab will be a manned re-usable multipurpose space laboratory, carried by the
space shuttle. Hence, the exposed film by the space metric camera will be returned
for processing to the ground, similarly as the film from an aerial metric camera.
(Doyle, 1978; Konecny and Schroeder, 1978).
In addition to Landsat-based resource surveys and mapping, the MOTOROLA
X-band Side Looking Airborne Radar (SLAR) will be used for mapping of 33,000
sq.km in South Sumatra and South Kalimantan at 1 : 260,000 scale. The main
advantage of SLAR is its capability to record the ground surface through clouds. If
the results will be useful for vegetation surveys, more SLAR coverage will be
planned to enable compilation of reconnaissance resource maps in regions covered
most of the year by clouds.
To support research and training in applications of remote sensing and image
processing to resource mapping, a Remote Sensing Applications Centre will be
established as part of the Central Resource Mapping Laboratories of
BAKOSURTANAL. its main objective will be development of the appropriate
technology for resource mapping based on remote sensing, suitable for the
conditions in Indonesia. Furthermore, remote sensing specialists from resource
agencies will get the opportunity to conduct some of their work at the Centre and to
use its modern facilities.
3.2. Small Scale Aerial Photography
Small scale aerial photography will provide the main input fot compilation of
orthophoto base map and for interpretation of resource data.
In Sumatra, Irian Jaya and Maluku archipelago only panchromatic: aerial
photographs at approx. 1 : 100,000 scale will be available for both tasks. For the
rest of Indonesia, the aerial photography will be taken by a dual-camera system,
using two types of films and two types of lenses, which record the ground
simultaneously at two scales. Configuration of a dual-camera system will be
following:
1-st camera : super-wide angle lens, panchromatic film;
2-nd camera : wide angle lens, color-[R (false color) film.
