The next step towards a more complete system would be the construction of a
gimbal system, in order to reduce the large rotations of the camera. Light alumi-
nium alloy should be used and the size and weight should be kept to a minimum.
However, the incorporation of such a device might decrease the quality of the
photography, as it will introduce, undoubtedly, instability and vibrations. A
way of determining the position of the camera, especially the flying height, at
the time of the photography, should also be developed. At the same time manpower,
cost and simplicity should be considered.
As in the case of a balloon system, the use of wide angle lens should be
favoured. Most 35 mm cameras provide a wide choice of interchangeable lenses and
care should be taken not to use lenses that would deform the shapes (super wide
angle or fish-eye lenses). For measuring the 35 mm negatives monoscopic obser-
vations were employed. If it is desired to measure natural detail points, stereo-
scopic measurements for avoiding misidentification are necessary. Access to a
stereocomparator may not be assumed as trivial, therefore some other simple and
cost effective means, such as premarking, should be preferred or developed.
