Full text: Report of the International Workshop on Global Databases

(1b) Legend/categorizations (Ryutaro Tateishi)
For categorized data such as land cover and soil type, there are many kinds of legends or categories in
different countries and different projects. UNEP and FAO have started their efforts to harmonize land
cover and land use classifications.
How should we determine legend/category for global land cover data, global soil type data etc.?
13:30 - 14:30 Discussion (II)
(2a) Accuracy/quality (David Hasting)
The accuracy/quality of global datasets should be reasonably measured and the description of the
accuracy/quality should be attached to the distributed global datasets. Without it, we cannot estimate
of the reliability of the results derived from the distributed global datasets.
What kind of accuracy and quality should be measured?
How should we measure and describe accuracy/quality of global datasets?
(2b) Data availability, data access and dissemination rights (Dennis Ojima)
Several organizations distribute or sell global datasets independently. There is no common or unified
data distribution system.
What is present problems in data availability and data access and dissemination rights?
How should we cope with these problems?
14:50 - 15:50 Discussion (III)
(3a) Map projection and data structure (Jan-Peter Muller)
Most global data are based on latitude/longitude coordinate system. Simple raster data format is most
commonly used for available global datasets.
What map projection should be a basic map projection for global database?
What data structure is suitable for global database? Raster? Global tessellation? Quadtree? Another?
(3b) Integration of national mapping activities into global monitoring systems &
harmonization of ongoing global mapping projects (Hiroshi Murakami)
Many countries have their national land digital datasets.
How can we utilized these existing datasets for the establishment of global database?
There are many projects which have the aim to produce global or regional datasets or databases.
How can we harmonize or integrate for the establishments of global database?
