the highest temperature of 5.5'C at 14:00. Towards evening, the temperature gradually decreased until it reached 3.5'C 
at 18:00. Fig.1 shows the temperature distribution on the surface of the stone statue at the time highest temperature, 
andthe highest surface temperature was found from the breast to the neighhood of the chin. In the distribution of the 
temperature change in Fig.2, a significant difference was also found from the breast to the neighbourhood of the chin, 
thereby indicating that the surface temperature of this area tends to easily become warmer or cooler, depending upon 
the external air temperature. 
4,Conclusions 
As far as the modes of weathering and deterioration of this stone statue are concered, one of the characteristic features 
is that the surface of the stone taken an eardrum shape, rises and finally peels off. At the locations where the stone 
surface has taken an eardrum shape, indicating rise, the giving and receiving of heat by the rock interior are stopped, 
thereby permitting the hypothesis that the thermal capacity of the rock surface has apparently become smaller. Such 
locations seem to show greater temperature differences from the distribution of temperature changes. 
In the distribution of the peeling-off locations of the stone statue shown in Fig.3, the part peeling-off above the chest of 
the stone statue is remarkable, thereby indicating the progress of deterioration for the upper part of the stone statue. 
The result of the measurement by the infra-red thermograph also matches quite well to the true condition. 
The conditions of weathering and deterioration of the stone Buddha statue are being comprehensively investigated from 
the viewpoints of the geological structure and petrology and from environmental viewpoints such as water quality, 
atmosphere, and vegetation.
