2. CAMERA SPECIFICATIONS
The Rollei ChipPack has been concipated as a digital back for the well known Rollei middle format cameras (Fig. 1). Interchanging
the film magazine and the ChipPack, the analogoues camera becomes a digital camera and vice versa. All standard components,
especially the lenses, can be used with the ChipPack. Inside the ChipPack a CCD-sensor from Loral/Fairchild with 2048 x 2048
sensor elements is used. Tab. 1 shows some technical data of the recording system.

Tab. 1: Technical data of the ChipPack
The ChipPack is available as color and black/white version. At the color version three images with the whole resolution are taken,
using different filters. The black and white version, originally concipated for measuring purposes, is equipped without any filter. The
camera is controlled by a SCSI-box, which is responsible for the camera control and the temporary storage of image data. This
conception has a lot of advantages:
- The camera can be used with different computer systems.
- The recording system is fully controllable by the computer. This includes the image recording and the setup of important camera
parameters like exposure time and aperture. This is important especially for industrial applications with cameras mounted at
inaccessible recording stations.
- With one SCSI controller up to seven cameras can be controlled. So it is possible to work simultaneously with a lot of cameras
without any special hardware. All cameras connected to a controller can do the exposure within 1/10 of a second. Fig. 2 shows the
principle of a multi-camera configuration. |
- The transfer of image data is done via the SCSI interface, too. This allows a fast transfer of the data to the host computer.
- Image data are aquired with a radiometric resolution of 12bit and are transformed to 8bit data. Depending on the application during
the transformation any kind of gradation table can be programmed.
- It is possible to work with areas of interest. This allowes the transfer of a smaller amount of data, if only a part of the image is
important for the current measurement.
- The camera is delivered with a library for the SCSI- interface. So the camera control can be integrated very easily in different kind
of user defined software.
