3.3 Superimposition and project planning
Project planning is another potential use of an integrated mapping
system. Apart from test plotting and revision, superimposition gives
the ability to evaluate data describing future plans created by design
or computation by overlaying it with the stereo model for a visual
comparison with the current local situation.
Planning of buildings and constructions are supported. A digital
roadway design superimposed to the stereo model gives an impression,
whether the new traverse can be harmonically integrated to the terrain
and to the situation. Variation of suburb design with new roads,
industrial areas, bridges, power lines etc. helps to find out a
practicable solution. Underground utility networks for water,
electricity or communications may possibly be optimized, documented
and bound into future development plans (e.g. regional policy of a
land government, regional planning, urban planning) /2/. For planning
of catchment basin computed water levels of the expected flooded
area can be shown as well as computed isolines for flood control
concerning the placement of new buildings.
Quite recently superimposition is obtaining importance for project
planning within the scope of reallotment. Creeks have to be diverted,
new roads have to be layed out and lend parcels have to be merged.
Conceptions and wishes of land owners may be examined and accepted.
Demands of nature conservation (e.g. settlement area and water
protection area) might be verified and alternatives could be worked
out.
4. OUTLOOK
Investment into the superimposition as an option to analytical plotters
pays back soon, especially in digital mapping. Therefore superimposition
already is a must in photogrammetry.
