many people have met the Santa Claus or the Father Christmas
himself! Well, then the last snow melts and soon summer
tourists start arriving.
Visitors ‘come “by air, by rail and by road. In summer the
popular camping site is at the riverside close to the centre
and close to this Lappia House.
Numerous local folkloristic festivals take place at the Pôyk-
kölä manor house which is an ethnographic museum.
I hope that you distinguished participants of the Symposium
"From Analytical to Digital" will see many points of interest
in Rovaniemi and that you will enjoy your stay in the capital
of Lapland.
On behalf of the City of Rovaniemi I have the honour to welcome
you all in Rovaniemi and the Lappia House.
ADDRESS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE ISPRS
G. Konecny (FRG)
Prof. Dr.
President Kilpelä, Director Raitanen, Mr. Mayor, distinguished
guests, friends of photogrammetry and remote sensing.
1986 marks the midyear between the international congresses
between Rio de Janeiro 1984 and Kyoto in 1988. And this is
when the direction of the work of our technical commissions
and of the Society as a whole during the Congress period is
determined. During this year a heavy responsibility is imposed
on our seven technical Commission Presidents and their Working
Group Chairmen, as well as on the Council of our Society to
steer our discipline in directions adequate to times.
Commission III pre-occupying itself according to our Statutes
with mathematical methods of restitution and analysis in photo-
grammetry and remote sensing has always been considered as a
leading Commission looking further into the future than those
Commissions dealing with present day applications. And this
is why it has a special responsibility and why it has achieved
recognition and prestige for its work in the past.
This is a second time in succession that Commission III is
under the direction of the Finnish Society of Photogrammetry
and it can benefit from the long experience of Einari Kilpelà,
Aino Savolainen and their many co-workers in Finland who have
gained this experience while preparing and organizing the
excellent Helsinki Congress of 1976 and while leading Commis-
sion III since 1980 and while participating in the Society's
affairs in Council and its special Commissions since 1972.
