and eastern edges of this area whilst the usual parallel cross strips are flown to cover 
the area, 
Three groups of ground control are established on each key. strip, one group at 
each end and another in the centre, Bridging by means of a Cambridge Stereo-comparator 
is carried out between this ground control enabling co-ordinates of selected pass points 
common to both key and cross strips to be computed, Using the values of these points 
further bridging is observed on cross strips. 
After adjustment of each strip a final block adjustment is made graphically and 
values are transferred to Wild and Williamson Multiplex Equipment for subsequent plotting. 
Details of a pre.iminary report on this method of adjustment with some results 
on accuracy and time factors are given in Annexure F, 
Another topographical map series published by this department is at a scale of 
I miles to 1 inch. This covers the whole of the State and has been compiled from exist- 
ing information gathered from all sourees, gaps in any information being supplied from 
county charts and aerial photography. 
Large scale topographical mapping is also undertaken for various departments 
using large scale photography flown by Wild RC5 camera, Plotting is by Wild equipment of 
which this department has acquired one A7 Autograph and three A8 Stereo-plotters, Some 
of this mapping has been : 10 chains to 1 inch with 20 ft contour for city development 
and town planning and at the same scale with 10 ft contours for water conservations small 
isolated areas at hOO ft to 1 inch with 10 ft contour .for hydro-electric purposes, Some 
planimetric mapping has been compiled at JO ft to 1 inch for road re-alignment and a map 
at 200 ft to 1 inch is to be prepared for the Highways Department. 
This Department has no facilities for the reproduction of mapping. 
Hydro-Electricity Commission of Tasmania 
  
The Hydro-Electricity Commission of Tasmania has a small photogrammetric staff 
to supply the mapping requirements of their department in the investigation and design of 
vater storage and hydro-electric power. 
Photography is flown by private contract using a Wild RC7 camera at a scale of 
1:5000 for subsequent plotting by their Wild A7 Autograph. 
Terrestrial photography is also plotted for the investigation and design of dams 
in the steep gorge country of the state, 
    
examples of mapping carried out using this equipment has been at scales of 
hOO ft to 4 ineh with 2 ft contours for general storage reservoirs; 100 ft to 1 inch with 
2 to 5 ft contours for general plan constructions and 20 ft to 1 inch with 2 ft contours 
for dam design, 
Private mapping organisation

on a contract basis in Australia, the activities of those engaged on this work are satig- 
factorily fulfilling a role in the supply of mapping to their various clients,

his company is the main agency for flying of aerial photography in Australia

‘aged in meeting the demands of aerial photography from most of the mapping 
Australia, As an indication of their activity in this field it is estimated 
: t time, this company is photographing 100,000 square miles of country 
   
To carry out this task this company possesses the following aircraft with the 
necessary ancillary equipment: 2 Avro Ansons, 3 Lockheed Hudsons, 1 Douglas Dakota and 1 
   
Catalina (fc geophysical vork only); cameras used beino Williamson Eacle IX, OSC and 
Wild RC5 using Ross 6, 8i, 10 and 12 inch and Wild Avioson li ineh lens, In addition, 
they have the facilities for processing negatives and duplicating prints. 
  
  
Since 1948 this company in addition to their aerial survey activities, have con- 
tracted to supply various types of topographiesl raprin”. To carry out this plotting they 
have acquired four 7 projector and two 3 projector Williamson Multiplex Equipments plus a 
Wild A7 Autcgraph which hac been used to map for some of the following contracts :- 
5C00 square miles at ! inches to 1 mile with 50 ft contours using Mult iplex for Snowy Moun- 
tains Scheme; 50 ft to 1l inch vith 2 ft contour usinr the 47 Autograph for design of road
