Photogrammetry in Greece
PRIVATE SURVEYORS
The stage of sufficiency which the Topograpbic and Cadastral Servi-
ce has so far attained in covering .all phototopographic needs
in the various civil services of this country, as well, as the high
cost of photogrammetric instruments, has not allowed professional
engineers concerned with surveying, to apply photogrammetry inde-
pendantly, in the sphere of their activities. Nevertheless, between
1950 and 1952, some of them have undertaken photogrammetric
works, assisting the Topographic and Cadastral Service in map com-
pilations. Later on private surveyors have also worked for the Pu-
blic Organization for Electrification. In addition to this they quite,
recently have worked for the National Statistic Service, for
which they had accomplished precious work in composing detai-
led sketchmaps of 415 cities of the country in a scale of 1: 5000 from
aerophotography taken by the Royal Air Force. The last maps, com-
pleted by other details, will form the basic plan on which the ge-
neral census of the people in March 1961 will be carried out. It 1s
most likely, that for the first time in the whole world aerophoto-
graphy offers so many services for census purposes.

NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS
The faculty of Topographical Engineering which was founded in
1917 included among its compulsory courses Photogrammetry. The
students, exeept their theoretical education, were also trained either
with instruments of the Phototopographic Section, or with the instru-
ments which were supplied to the school by the above Section. But
this year the faculty was supplied by the Zeiss Aerotopograph firm
with the following instruments :
1 Stereoplanigraph C8, 1 Stereotop, 1 Rectifier
With the above instruments supplied, and the assistance which
is continuously afforded by the Topographic and Cadastral Ser-
vice, it is believed that the efforts of the future professor of Pho-
togrammetry will be quite fruitful. It should be noted that during
the last 15 years there has not been any particular professor who
taught the course of Photogrammetry, but this defficiency will be
arranged in the course of this year.

Photogrammetric studies and the impovements in this branch of
science are carried out in Greek through foreign publications trans-
lated and published in the Bulletin of Army Geographic Service
