mission Sydney; 100 ft to 1 inch with 5 ft contours for private estate agents with a view
to land development, Some aerial photography flown has been for the use of :- Oil search
in eonjunetion with anairbornemagnetometer. to detect oil bearing deposits in the terrain;
Detection of areas in inland Australia for possible water supply by noting tone of vege-
tation which was not apparent on the ground; Detection of area under cultivation of sugar
cane and rice which were in excess of that permitted by law; Examination of crops areas
to determine effectiveness of an insect which had been placed in the crops with the hope
of eradicating a pest; To assist in estimation of damage caused by floods in the Hunter
Valley of New South Wales,
Current aerial photography contracts include amongst -others, 27,000 square miles
of Wild RC9 photography at approximate scale of 1:80,000 of the Great Barrier Reef for the
Commonwealth Government and similar photography of 55,000 square miles of Western Australia
for oil search work,
This company has a staff capable of fair drawing maps with subsequent processing
for reproduction by lithographic means up to the zinc plate stage.
Messrs. Barrie and Tait Pty. Ltd.
This company has recently entered the contract mapping field and have acquired a
Wild A8 Stereoplotter to carry out their mapping tasks,
To date they have completed some large scale topographical mapping for develop-
mental projects,
In a contract for the compilation of a planimetric map of 1500 acres at 200 feet
to 1 inch for the Housing Commission of New South Wales the Jerie method of block adjust-
ment of the photography using 6 control points was satisfactorily used,
Geosurveys of Australia Ltd.

Geosurveys of Australia Ltd undertakes geological mapping and investigations on
behalf of their clients in the search for oil.
In this respect they have prepared a considerable coverage of preliminary geo-
logieal mapping within the Commonwealth, The extent of this mapping is shown on Annexure
G, The majority of this mapping which has been derived mainly from photo mosaics compiled
from governmental sources is available at scales of L miles and 16 miles to 1 inch,
In areas where a closer investigation is desired astronomical fixations are
established by their own staff and an assemblage of air photographs by slotted templates is
made, Photographs are then interpreted for their geological and topographical information
and plotted by simple graphical means, To assist in this plotting a Zeiss Stereotope may
also be used,
This company is examining photography of 200,000 square miles of Burma for the
purposes of oil search whilst the island of Timor is to be similarly investigated.
Other Applications of Aerial Photography

Apart from topographic and planimetric mapping numerous governmental and private
agencies are increasing their use of aerial photography to supply information for their
own particular interest, These uses ean be varied but amongst the most common are -
Geology and Mineral Resources
The Commonwealth Government's Bureau of Mineral Resources together with some
State Mines Departments and private enterprise have carried out considerable geological
mapping in Australia and New Guinea in their search for oil and minerals,
A report on some aspects of their activities is given in Annexure H whilst the
Mm
coverage of such mapping is shown on Annexure G,
Land Resources and Soil
The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation has two divisions
namely, Division of Land Research and Regional Survey and Division of Soils which make
extensive use of aerial photographs in the course of their activities as described in
Annexure J and Annexure K respectively whilst the areas surveyed are shown in Annexure L,
Forestry
