The role of aerial surveys in highway engineering is intrinsically a part 
of the nature of aerial photographs and surveys for, and design of, highways. 
A detailed chronology is given of the applications of aerial surveys in high- 
way engineering. The applications are comprehensively presented for the pre- 
liminary engineering stages and briefly for construction and subsequent stages. 
Statements are made on electronic computers and on the procurement of aerial
