exceed 50 96. The largest savings are however to find in minimizing
of the construction and traffic-costs.
In order nevertheless to give some notion of the costs involved one
may draw attention to the following. The costs of aerial photography
amount to about 1500 kr./10 km. 'The instrument costs for Balplex are
about 10 kr./hr. and for A 8 about 25 kr./hr.
For the planning of 10 km in Balplex in normal terrain, with 2 or 3
alternatives, about 5—10 days are required. The production of the
complete map on the scale of 1:2 000 with contours requires a working
period of about 1 day/km. The cost of this map, exclusive of ground
measurement, costs for use of instruments and treatment, amounts to
about 2000—4000 kr./10 km. To this should be added the costs for
aerial photography at the rate of about 1500 kr./10 km; but as the pic-
tures are used for so many other stages in the planning the costs for
them should not be included in the costs for the map. The figures given
above are of course to be regarded as average figures, and they may
vary from case to case.
Thanks to these low costs it is economically sound to utilize photo-
grammetry also in connection with smaller planning projects, e. g.
those covering distances of some kilometers.
Through preliminary planning on these lines it is possible to make a
quick investigation of the road system in large areas, even if the whole
of the planned length of road is not intended for immediate construc-
tion. From the viewpoint of the localization of settlement and other ge-
neral considerations it is of great value to have investigated the course
of the road in good time before the concrete carrying out of a road pro-
ject, so that both the regional and the local planning may be adapted to
the same. In Sweden a proposed roadsystem of about 3000 km in length
was photographed in spring 1959 and the planning in this material is
going on.
