sufficient to try other methods, for instance, expert systems. The key to 
the problem may be found one level higher: only after having sufficiently 
analyzed how we solve certain problems can we then look for appropriate 
methods or develop them. 
The instructions to a draftsman or operator are relatively concise, they 
may even be ambiguous and incomplete, assuming that there is enough 
knowledge and common sense to solve the problem. On the other hand, for a 
computer to perform the same task requires a great deal more 
instructions, and if we assume knowledge is present, then it has to be put 
into the machine at an earlier stage. 
Artificial Intelligence and the Map Machine 
How do we gain insight into the mental faculties of the photogrammetrist 
and cartographer in order to derive the map making theory? Artificial 
intelligence deals with the fundamental nature of mind, as physics is 
concerned with the fundamental nature of matter and energy (Newell). On a 
more mundane level, Rich defines artificial intelligence as the study of 
how to make computers do things at which, at the moment, people are 
better (Rich(83)).
