ABSTRACT
The objective of this study is to analyse and compare two data sets of both TM/Landsat and SAR/ERS-1,
during two seasons (dry and wet), of an important region with irrigated agriculture.
In order to perform this comparison, two approaches were used: a qualitative and a quantitative one. After
visual image interpretation supported by field work and auxiliary data, the Kappa coefficient was applied and
tested. The results indicate that merging of these data sets strongly improves the quality of interpretation,
specially when principal component and intensity, hue and saturation (IHS) transforms are used.
