ABSTRACT 
The Amazónia deforestation has been discussed at length on different levels. However, both federal and state 
agencies have found it difficult to asses the dynamics of this process. A cooperation between FEMA-MT and 
CSR-IBAMA provided trustworthy results which improved the understanding of the Amazónia deforestation 
in the state of Mato Grosso - Brazil The monitoring of Amazónia forest was performed using 
TM/LANDSAT data, obtained during 1992 and 1993. Results from visual interpretation showed an intense 
deforestation process in Amazónia.
