Prof. Dr. Giulio Sandini received his degree in 1976 in Electronic Engineering and Bioengineering (magna cum 
laude) at the University of Genova. Since then he has occupied several positions as scientist at the universities at 
Pisa and at Genova, establishing a cooperation between the two universities in Bioengineering and Telematics. 
In 2000 he was appointed a full professorship in Bioengineering at the university of Genova, where he currently 
is is teaching and in particular leading the “LIRA-lab” research group at the Department for Informatic Systems 
and Telematics DIST. 
The main research activities and interests of Prof. Sandini and his group are carried out around two main 
projects: "Babybot" and "Retina-like sensors". Within these working fields, the laboratory is trying to understand 
by a computational neuroscience approach how the human brain is working. So far the group has carried more 
then 20 research projects, amongst them several ESPRIT-programs as a principal investigator. 
Prof. Sandini is invited frequently by renowned laboratories as visiting scientist, including the MIT at Boston. 
He was involved in organizing a mere dozen of scientific conferences all around the globe and is in the editorial 
board of two journals. His publication list currently is containing some 250 works, including 50 papers in major 
journals and more than 20 chapters in textbooks.
