Since area is
totally devoid of any forest cover hence no or little mixing of crop
categories. Thus sugarcane was classified as separate class.
The separability study was carried out of the study area in order to
evaluate the degree of separability among different land use
classes. Confusion matrix of training areas was adopted for
saparability study.
Area statistics were generated for each land use /land cover
classes.
RESULT AND DISCUSSION
The aim of the study was to identify and demarcate sugarcane
cropped area and hence nine land use/land cover classes were
generated in the area, because of spectral saparability between
paddy and sugarcane crop, separate classes were generated for
these two. (Figure — 2 & figure — 4 show standard FCC and
LU/LC map of the area).

Among agricultural area, Paddy, sugarcane and fallow land were
identified and delineated. Total agriculture area was calculated as
177561.05 ha which comprise nearly 69.14% of the total study
area. However, due emphasis was given to sugarcane crop, which
cover 14726.60 ha, that is 5.73% of the total study area. (Fig. — 3)
shows the spatial distribution of sugarcane crop in the area.

Further, out of total agriculture area, fallow land occupies
105142.90 ha, which comprise nearly 40% of the total study area.
The large area under current fallow may be attributed to
harvesting of paddy crop as data used was of late October, when
harvesting of paddy starts. However, another cause of keeping
field under fallow may be because farmers are not getting
maximum benefits from sugarcane crop, which was one of the
major crop grown in the area earlier. It has been reported from
IAPRS & SIS, Vol.34, Part 7, “Resource and Environmental Monitoring”, Hyderabad, India, 2002
survey that sugarcane-growing farmers are facing acute financial
problem, even they are not getting their principal amount. This
leads to lowering of interest of farmers for growing sugarcane in
the area.

Thus sugarcane, which happens to be one of the major
crop cultivated in the area, now became non-profitable crop to be
grown. Thus lack of proper management should be main factor
responsible for this declining trend of sugarcane production in the
district.
RECOMMENDATION
l. This study reveals several factors (agro-economic/socio-
economic), which are responsible for the present status of
sugarcane cultivation in Deoria district.
2. | Payment from factories plays important role for the future of
this crop in the district because majority of the farmers are
below poverty line. Delay in payments results in non-
performance and deviation from the traditional sugarcane
cultivation.
3. Lack of consolidated co-oprative approach also results in
different production basis and individual low income.
