8. WATER RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
The water resources of Yamunanagar district are under threat
owing to depleting water table and deterioration in quality of
water. The economy of Yamunanagar districts is mainly
dependant upon agriculture and industry. The challenge
therefore is to make these resources sustainable to make them
more productive and their exploitation less hazardous.
In the present study the water resources management in
Yamunanagar district has been envisaged (Figure- 1) on the
basis of hydrogeomorphological characteristics, drainage,
landuse and status of groundwater exploitation. Based on

satellite image interpretation with selective field checks a
number of water harvesting structures to augment surface water
resources as well as recharging of groundwater are suggested
(Tables- 5) which include sub-surface dyke (SD), check dam
(CD) and desiltation (D) of existing reservoir/tanks. The level
of development of groundwater in the Yamunanagar district as
a whole is put under 'grey' category except Jagadhri and
Radaur blocks, which are over exploited. The Kandi area can be
explored with deep tube wells for augmenting the groundwater
resources as well as attempts of recharging the aquifers in the
plains should be made.
