geographical area (TGA) of the country. Others which include
area under Grassland grazing land, mining industrial waste,
shifting cultivation, snow cover, salt pans etc., accounted for
7.47 mha or 2.28 per cent of TGA. Un-surveyed area
accounted for 8.32 mha or 2.53 per cent of TGA (Table 1).
. The detailed (Level-II) land use / land cover of 22 classes and
their area statistics is shown in Table 2.

The detailed area under agricultural land use / land cover
categories and the area under different forest categories within
noticed forest area are shown in Tables 3 and 4. The total
agricultural land area accounted for 165.24 mha or 50.26 per
cent of the TGA of the country during 1988 — 89 as against
169.49 mha or 51.55 per cent reported by BES for the same
