Dwellings
The dwellings around Bicholim mining area are extended upto
Bicholim River and its beyond in east with altitude of 8-10 MSL,
Myam-lake in west with altitude of 20-25 MSL. The sloppy of
eastern portion around ridge has Vishwas Nagar colony, Mulgaon,
Lumgaon village and surrounding lakes, Bicholim town has
population of 35000 as per 1991 census. The dwelling status around
mining area for 97-98 is summarized in Table 5.
Landuse changes
The landuse changes for Goan iron ore mining area are due to
depletion of shallow pit, increase in stripping ratio and increase in
mechanization. The landuse changes area related to land and water
are responsible for diminishing of topography, soil erosion along
unstable slope and sedimentation along surface water (Rao et al.,
2002). The land and water associated landuse changes for Bicholim
mining area has been monitored through comparison of Aerial
photograph (February 1978), Landsat TM (January 1987) and their
quantification is summarized in Table 6.

The major changes pertaining to land are open mixed vegetation,
deforestation, and slopy land illustrated through Figure 4 (a).
Similarly the major changes pertaining to water are muddy land
paddy field siltation among river and ponds are illustrated through
Figure 4 (b).
The comparison of different kinds of aerospace data for Bicholim
mining area reveals that following major landuse changes:
æ Natural vegetation as shrub is confined to western portion of
iron ore ridge in association with latritic capping.
562
4 Top of iron ore ridge has land derived landuse feature
pertaining to quarry activity.
2 Sedimentation in Mulgaon, Lamgaon and Myam Lake has
been observed as water derive landuse.
4 Tailing pond sediment is observed along southern portion of
iron ore ridge.
æ Supari, coconut garden occurs along north of iron ore ridge.
CONCLUSION
All the aerospace data provide major geomorphic, geologic, mining,
drainage and dwelling aspects of Goan iron ore resource. The
sequential coverage through temporal nature of aerospace data has
proved a valuable tool for monitoring landuse changes along
Bicholim mining area. The following are the major concluding
remarks:
? Sloppy land and associated quarrying activity towards land
related landuse are identical over Aerial photograph.
? Drainage characteristics and geomorphology are identical over
landsat 1 & 2 imagery.
? Water related landuses are better delineated over Landsat TM
IRS 1C data.
