nowned document delivery centers, formerly called libraries. There is still no
international document delivery center. There are, however, several large na-
tional centers ready to suppyl documents to foreign countries and directly to

bureaucratic procedures for the first-time user. You have to apply for approval
by requesting order forms and buying coupons. When you have received these you
may place your order. For each ten pages of the original article you have to
stick a coupon on the order form. Then you will receive a photocopy. (The "Lend-
ing" in the library's name refers to a service to libraries only, not to private
persons:) When you have made your offering to St. Bureaucracius, then you will
get a very quick and reliable service. The general turn-around time is 1 to 3
days, plus postal delivery time. The order forms are without charge, but you
have to put exactly the right number of coupons on each form: you have to know
how long the unkown article is. If a coupon is missing you get your order back
with a notice saying how many coupons are needed. As one coupon values up to 10
pages, 2 coupons cover a photocopy of 11 pages as well as one of 19 pages. One book
of coupons is sold for b 44 to oversears users.

The next document delivery center to mention here is the Centre de Documenta-
tion of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris. The CNRS
is by its Centre de Documentation at the same time an important database pro-
ducer and a document supplier for all documents abstracted in its "Bulletin
Signalétique” or its online version PASCAL. For conventional ordering the pro-
cedure is similar to that of the BLLD. You have to buy coupons, called vignettes.
For the first 10 pages you have to send 3 vignettes, for all further sets of up
to 10 pages you have to add 2 vignettes. Thus 7 vignettes value 21 to 29 pages
(34 2x 2). There is a reduction on this price of 20$ for CNRS laboratories
and French universities, and a rise of 25$ if you dare to order without vig-
nettes. Vignettes are sold in sets of 25 for 170 Ffrs + VAT.
While the CNRS de Documentation is also a rather universal libary this doesn't
apply to the German TIB Hannover. Since old days Germany is proud of its uni-
versal libaries with famous special collections. In the 1950s several of them
have been enlarged and built-up to National Central Subject Libaries. One
of them is the Technische Informationsbibliothek in Hannover. TIB is the docu-
ment delivery center for all literature relating to engineering/technology and
the basic sciences: chemistry, mathematics, physics. The subscription to some
19,000 Serials may give an impression of the comprehensiveness of the collec-
tion. From architecture to water supply, from computers to photogrammetry
everything is collected - and supplied.
There are two ways for ordering documents:
you may write a letter when you need just one signle article, or you should buy
order forms for a number of papers and for a regular use of the TIB.
