| will venture to suggest that in the course of your deliberations you give thoughts to these 
problems, and evolve practical and feasible solutions. You should also give thought to how deve- 
loping countries would not be only users of the technologies developed elsewhere but also how 
they can acquire such technology so that they can ma ke meaningful contributions and impact on 
development. 
On a lighter note, Nigerians are well noted for their warm hospitality. It is my hope that 
you would take time off from your heavy technical schedule to visit some places of interest 
which the organisers of this symposium have arranged for you. |. implore you to remotely sense 
our natural resources (we are blessed with many) and explore them if you wish. 
Once again on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, | welcome vou to our great coumry.

Before declaring the Symposium open | would like to express the appreciation of the Federal 
Military Government to the organisers of this symposium. The government is waiting to receive 
concrete, relevant and practical suggestions which, if implemented will go a long way to helping 
us to achieve oyr objectives. Inspite of the present ecanomic situation my Ministry has given 
reasonable financial assistance for the hosting of this symposium. | would like to assure you of 
the continued support of this government, financial or otherwise, for similar ventures in future.
