2. PRESENT STATUS OF THE TASK OF THE WORKING GROUPS
A detailed report of the programme of activities of each Working Group and their implemen-
tation will be rendered by the Working Group chairmen. This paper gives a brief summary of
activities and achievements of each Working Group as at June, 1986.
2.1 INVENTORY OF MANPOWER INCLUDING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH FACILITIES
Task Definition:
Establishment of an International Documentation Centre on manpower, education and
research facilities in surveying and mapping.
Preparing specifications for access and retrieval of data from the Centre.
Continuously updating the Inventory of Manpower, Education and Research Facilities.
Promoting the Centre as a joint venture of ISPRS, FIG, ICA and ISM.
A data bank of inventory of manpower including education and research facilities in survey-
ing and mapping on a world-wide basis was initiated and established by Prof. A. J. Brandenberger
in 1972 in Laval University, Canada under the auspices of the United Nations and with the ISPRS
as co-proprietor. Input data to the Bank are obtained on a continuous basis through specially
designed questionnaires. In the 1980 — 1984 period, the Joint Board of the International Union
of Surveying and Mapping Organisations agreed to establish an International Documentation Cen-
tre in close collaboration with the Laval Data Bank, and co-hosted by the ITC. Unfortunatel y,
this Centre has not taken off. The data of the Laval Bank therefore remains the only source infor-
mation on facilities in surveying and mapping on a world-wide basis.
It is expected that the chairman of the Working Group will report on the cooperation, if any,
with the ITC on the establishment of the IDC. In the meantime, the work of the Working Group
is implemented through 19 regional sub-working groups.
