surface irrigation, while the lighter-toned areas to the west are sprinkler-fed. Lighter areas beyond
the outer margins of the rice laridsare rain-fed, with bush land lying on the higher ground beyond.
The ground area for each class identified is shown as part of Table 3. It can be seen that for the
area studied, rain-fed cultivation accounted for approximately 50% of the total area in 1984.
Fadama lands, both natural and irrigated, occupied about 7% of the area, while rice and sugar
covered just over 5.5%.
