Because a very hlgh percentage of dereliction occurs within catogories waste land (k) and demo | Ished
sites (h) other categories tend to be insignificant In areal terms, this is not to say that they are
not significant in terms of severity or environmental blight. However, a similar appraisal ie. In
terms of total dereliction, and as a percentage of the total sample area, could be applied to these
other categories if It was deemed necessary.
It was also noticed that some sites had changed their category le. some derelict sites had become
scrap yards, and although now In use, remained In the derelict land spoiled land category since they
had not been reclaimed
An overall reduction of 22% in the extent of derelict land has occurred between the years 1977 and
1979. However, by considering the total area of "new" dereliction, regardless of type in comparison
with the total area of reclaimed land over the same period, the resulting trend of increase or
decrease In dereliction will be evident. Since a dereliction "back log" exists, It can thus be
