The development of new methods of forest aerial photographs
interpretation and forest thematic mapping has led to the creation of
the automatized system for the processing of forest photography materials.
The system consists of a complex of technical means for processing and of
the developed software. Technical means including computers, scanning .
microdensitometers, digital displays and plotters form two technological
lines. One line is designed for automatized determination of forest assessment
indices of stands by photographs, the other - for compilation and contouring
of thematic mapping materials, such as forest management map-cases, maps Of
current changes in the forest and so on. Main stages and algorithms of photo
processing in each line are brought to industrial use in forest inventory.
Main operations used in the processing are : interactive contour
interpretation on displays, automatized recognition of stand classes and
land categories, determination of texture sings, machine determination of
forest assessment indices, automatized correction of indices by the known
interrelations, analytical restitution of contour images for mapping,
automatized plan assembling and so on. Examples of practical solution
of tasks are given.
