THEMATIC MAPPING OF FORESTS ON THE BASIS OF SPACE 
PHOTOGRAPHY MATERIALS

The paper tells about the informative value of space photography 
materials obtained from artificial Earth satellites of the "Kosmos” and 
"Meteor" series (including "Fragment" instruments), long-term orbital 
"Saljut" stations with respect to the tasks of thematic mapping. The need 
of various branches of economy in small-scale thematic forest maps is 
analysed and the requirements to map legends are given. In conformity 
with each scale series requirements to the space photograph resolution are 
determined. 
  
In the paper interpretational signs of space photos are analysed ; 
the main scheme of technology of work on thematic forest mapping is 
considered ; the role, contents and volume.of ground and aerial visual 
investigations are determined ; and data about the efficiency of forest 
mapping on the basis of space photography materials are given.
