Along the eastern Adriatic coast there is probably a sub-
IC ELEMENTS duction zone which is connected to the greatest number of earth-
AGERY AND quakes. :
KES IN THE
Analyzing the Landsat images on the continental part of
Yugoslavia there have been registered regional faults whose exten-
ding could be followed more than hundred kilometres.
On the map of tectonical elements obtained by Landsat
f images all places of the before mentioned earthquakes have been
recorded. Direct relation between fault tectonics (young faults
® from neotectonic period) and the earthquake epicentres were esta-
blished. :
It has been found out that the majority of earthquakes
occured along big faults on their crosses or places where the fa-
ults of different extending directions were faced. It ean be illu-
strated by the examples: around Ljubljana, Zagreb, Petringa, Banja
Luka, Rijeka, Imotski, Dubrovnik, Kotor ete. It can be concluded
that the zones along big faults are the cause of earthquake acti-
vities or potential seismic activities which must be particularly
noted while constructing the important structures (settlements,
factories, bridges, electric power plants, oil pipelines, roads,
railways ete). Landsat images have been proved to be very useful
in identification of big faults and faulty zones, specially for
their fast and economical recognition.
EXPLORATION OF GEOTHERMAL OCCURENCES
It was possible to locate and follow very precisely big-
ger ruptural deformations on the Landsat images. The identified
ruptures were recorded on the topographic base. In this way the
faults map of the western part of Yugoslavia was made. The known
mineral and thermo mineral springs were recorded on the some map
(Fig 2). The direct relation between fault tectonics and thermal
i.e. thermo mineral springs could be seen without any greater dif-
ficulties. For example it was found out that in the Zagreb. area
more than 90% of the known thermo mineral springs were situated on
the bigger faults or in their immediate vieinity (OLuië 1978). The
same case is with the Busovaóa fault Zn the area of Sarajevo.
Some faults along which thermal and thermo-mineral
springs appear have been known before. But, a certain number of
faults which were not registered before was found by studying Land-
sat images. On the Landsat images the faults known before could be
continuously followed and precisely defined on longer routes.
The fact that along big faults, which penetrate deep in-
to the Earth interior there are often geothermal phenomena made up
our mind on detailed explorations of such occurences in faulty zo-
nes. For example on the Landsat images, in faulty zone identified
for the first time, not so far from Zagreb (Topusko) precious pro-
visions of thermo-mineral water were discovered by geophysical me-
asurements and drillings.
