The originally identified land use categöries with their
known vegetation characteristics are identifiable on the
radar and satellite imagery respectively. By means of
detailed and systematic ground truth investigations, it is
hoped to confirm whether the findings in the study areas
can be applied to larger areas which exhibit similar image
characteristics.
The use of multi-date remote sensing imagery will indicate
trends in wood productivity in the fuelwood hinterland of Kano
which, in comparison with present consumption estimates,
will allow an objective assessment to be made of bhe
potential impact on the savanna ecosystem of the continued
use of fuelwood as the main source of rural energy,
