The regional-thematic structure of the atlas envisages
regarding materials with IO-I2 test areas in different natural
regions of the Soviet Union and GDR taken as examples. The test
areas are picked up in such a way that their instance should
enable consistent description of using images in the studies of
water bodies and land, ranging from geological-geomorphological
and landscape to economic-geographical studies.
Each section, opening up with a colour synthesized image
of the study area with the conjunction scheme and the textual
description of the territory, gives image interpretation results
in the form of thematic maps, largely, at scale I:400 000 —
I:500 000 with brief textual commentaries. The basic themes are
provided with explanations and recommendations as to the methods
of multiband image thematic interpretation.
The introductory part comprises, besides the title page,
introduction and contents, a gpecial page devoted to the method
of multiband space photography and the MKF-6 camera, as well as
another page with the plate conjunction scheme. Further materials
are presented according to the test areas, each provided with
a photograph, followed, then, by all the thematic and methodical
materials on the area under consideration.
Methodical issues are taken care of in the case of several
test areas, representing territories of different types:
The North-eastern Caspian - shallow waters;
The coast of the Okhotsk Sea and the coast of the Baltic
8ea - coastal areas;
The Northern and central areas of GDR - plain areas with
intensive land use;
Central Yakutia - plain north-taiga areas, areas of
thermokarst development;
‘The Northern Baikal region, the Southern Baikal region -
mountain-taiga areas;
South-east Kazakhstan - semi-desert piedmont areas and
intermontane depressions;
Ferganskaya valley, Golodnaya steppe - areas of irrigated
farming of Central Asia;
The Pamiro-Alay region - mountain areas of Central Asia.
The atlas presents a wide variety of trends of Earth
exploration. It embraces image application in the following fields
of geographical studies and thematic mapping: shallow water
studies — bottom landforms, bottom sediments, underwater vegeta-
tion, underwater landscapes; landforms studies - tectonic
structure, geomorphology; glaciological and hydrological studies -
the study of glaciation, thermokarst relief, channel processes,
water body pollution with river flow discharge; the study and
mapping of soil-vegetation cover and landscapes - vegetation of
arid areas, south-taiga and north-taiga, mountain forests, arid
and mountain-taiga landscapes; physical-geographical territorial
subdivision; agricultural studies - the mapping of land use and
crops; the study of populated places and settlement pattern; the
study of anthropogenic impact upon the natural environment and
conservation.
