Comparison of Simultaneous X- and L-Band Imagery From October 28, 1981.
Slant range is depicted from top to bottom with corresponding incidence angle shown at the LHS. |t
is clear that L-band emphasizes the roughness features (ridging and floes boundaries) but does not
exhibit the strong radar contrast between MY & younger ice which is present in the accompanying
X-band image. There are some interesting tonal variations in the young ice at X-band which do not
appear at L-band.

The two Images shown give similar grey tone variation with ice class; unlike the results of X/L
comparison above. The radar contrast between MY and younger ice does however appear to be reduced
at C-band even though, due to instrumental |imiatations, this channel has reduced signal to noise.
