these figures, that the total population was the same at the two dates of 
survey. 
Spatial details of changes in the areas of Urban and Residential land are seen in 
the computer maps. From these, the expansion of the Urban and Residential 
areas on the outskirts of the town is evident (Figures 4 and 5) as is the 
conversion of Residential land to other uses, mainly in the centre of the built- 
up area (Figure 6). 
CONCLUSION 
The system described, combining user interpretation of aerial photography, a 
simple recording method and the computer processing and display of data, is 
capable of producing land use information rapidly and in an extremely useful 
form. They key elements of simplicity and flexibility commend it as a 
particularly appropriate methodology for countries having rapidly developing 
urban areas but limited resources and trained personnel.
