The general image of the area of study is interesting; when "cultivated land"
was the main land use, the area seemed to be "alive" and "simple". On the con-
trary, since "urban" became the main land use, the area presents a picture of
chaos. Its basic characteristics are the arbitrary change of land use, the mi-
xing of the city functions, the not clearly defined transportation network and
the absence of the necessary public utility networks.
3. Conclusions
It has already been mentioned that the reliability of the application of the
remote sensing methodology to the specific area of study, has been checked by
30 field tests. This reliability, by land use categories, was: 100% for "culti-
vated land", "future construction sites and unimproved open space", "transpor-
tatiom network", "country houses" and "open working space".
This reliability decreased at 60% for "scattered residence". "dense residence",
"multi-family residence" and "closed working space".
The reason for this difference is that "dense" and "scattered residence" have
similar characteristics with low potential handicrafts and closed working space,
while enough industries have similar form with "multi-family residence".
It has been found out, at the same time, that reliability may increase when air
photographs of larger scale (e.g. 1:2.000 . 1:4.000) are used.
The above low reliability must not be rendered to the remote sensing methodolo-
gy. The important point, that we have already mentioned is that we have used
only already available material.
Air photographs have been taken as they still continue to be taken in Greece;
random, with no preliminary planning, with no prospect for specific future use,
without standards. Nevertheless, the elementary background for studying the land
use changes, has been created.
Besides the conclusions drawn from the analysis of maps, tables and diagrams,
one could make some proposals concerning the possible actions to be taken by
local government authorities. The object of such proposals is the solution of the
problems of the area, among which, the most important is environmental degra-
dation.
