AN INVESTIGATION METHODOLOGY FOR TERRITORIAL STUDIES 
IN UNKNOWN AREAS (EAST KALIMANTAN - TIMUR, INDONESIA)

Is here presented a methodology of investigation for terri- 
torial studies in unknown and almost impenetrable areas of East 
Kalimantan

methodology, based on the photointerpretation of aerial 
on few field-checks, permits to carry out from the 
the beginning, 3 physiographic maps: hidrologic map, 
map and land-use map. 
The first one shows the foundamental topographic elements 
like main pecks, one road, villages and the complete drainage 
patterns. 
The second map is characterized by slope-cathegories (4 clas 
ses: 0-347, 
pending on 
1-84, 8-152, over 15%) and by geomorphologic forms de- 
the lithology and geologic structures. 
The third map is an example of a type of land-use based 
mainly on the photointerpretation. 
It was possible to recognize 6 classes (Primary forest, Se- 
condary forest, Swamp forest, Swamp grassland, Cultivations). 
The few field-checks, all the possible ones, permitted the 
review of the photointerpretation; to collect some soil informa- 
tion; to add some elements for drawing at least two topographic 
sections. 
Finally, overlapping all these data, we obtained in a short 
time a satisfactory land-units map (5 units, each one characteri- 
zed by a slope-clas, a land-form and a type of land-use), which 
represents 
a land-suitability map for human settlements (the aim 
of the work).
