Figure 13: X — ray diffraction patterns of the betatized and annealed specimens of the spray formed alloy, the
positions of the y, — lines are marked by vertical lines
During the annealing of betatized specimens of the spray formed alloy a decomposition of the
metastable B, — phase is observed in a similar way as in case of the cast alloy. Fig. 12a and 12
b show the microstructures after the annealing at 500°C and 600°C. The metastable B; — phase
decomposes in a finegranular mixture of y, — and §, — phase. The y, — phase appears in form
of small particles inside of the former § — grains and in form of thin seams at the former B —
grainboundaries. The matrix consists of the orthorhombic Bi — phase. During the annealing at
700°C another microstructure is generated ( Fig. 12c ), which has a great likeness to the spray
formed state of the alloy ( Fig. 4 ). The y, — phase exists in form of seams at the former —
grainboundaries and in form of rosette — like particles inside of the former B — grains. The
light coloured matrix consists of the orthorhombic B; — phase. Additional fineglobular x —
segregates are observed in the microstructure.
The X — ray diffraction patterns of the betatized and annealed specimens of the spray formed
alloy are summarized in Fig. 13. It is to see, that the intensities of the marked y, - reflections
are predominant compared with the line intensities of the other phases. Consequently it is
correct to assume. that this phase predominates in the microstructures.
