The optical 3D measurement principle Focus-Variation enables the repeatable and
traceable measurement of micro-structured surfaces including corrosion and other surface
minium- und defects. The system combines the functionalities of a coordinate measurement system
Giesserei- and the technology of a surface measurement device. This allows users to measure form
and roughness with only one system. Also components with steep flanks and varying
c d surface finishes are measured with a vertical resolution of up to 10nm. Consequently, this
+ Compute detailed surface characterization allows the analysis of different forms of corrosion,
corrosive data and clarification of individual corrosive mechanics. The knowledge about
sasurement”, circumstances causing erosive and corrosive attack of material surfaces and protective
layers of components leads to the establishment of new guidelines to develop more
resistant material.

Computer- color information is mandatory when it comes to performing meaningful corrosive
investigations. Particularly, the evaluation and measurement of pit and degradation depths
via surface and roughness measurements plays an important role. These measurement

-Rundschau.
Irrespective of the type of corrosion, attacked surfaces usually show steep flanks and
strongly varying reflection properties. Targeting the aim of strengthening corrosion
resistance, measurement instruments have to meet specific requirements: measurement
of highly polished surfaces, flanks of more than 80° and color visualization to make sure
that surfaces are measured effectively. Also, high resolution measurements on
mechanically polished surfaces with a roughness Ra > 50nm and the measurement of
large measurement fields are of high importance.
Corrosion yearly causes a remarkable loss of the gross domestic product. Besides various
rather predictable forms of corrosion that cause general corrosive attack, the industry also
faces several hardly predictable corrosive forms that affect components locally. As
corrosive attacks can lead to sudden damage and breakdowns of buildings, industrial
