4. SUMMARY AND OUTLOOK 
Deformation structures around a Vickers hardness indent in a grain with an orientation close 
to (101) were investigated by means of SEM, EBSD and EDX. From the performed analyses 
the following major conclusions can be drawn:

ines ranging . The SEM investigation revealed sets of parallel deformation lines, which intersect 
each other and form surface steps. It was shown that the governing deformation 
mechanism in a grain closely oriented to (101) is dislocation slip and that the 
deformation structure is formed along the (211)- and (011)-directions. 
An influence of the segregation of iron and manganese on the observed deformation 
mechanism was not found. 
To acquire a deeper understanding of the deformation of the used austenitic Mn-steel, 
further hardness indents into grains with (001)- and (111)-orientation are needed. 
Particularly, as the Schmid factor for twinning in the (001)-orientation is higher than for slip.
