into the work of physical chemistry so as to serve at the same
time the purpose of treating the chemical side of the industries
from the theoretical point of view. Of course this cannot well
include stochiometry which together with the chapter on the
chemical properties as functions of physical properties, together
with spectroscopy and allied subjects can with advantage be
treated separately in conjunction with laboratory work in
ohysico-chemical measurements.
Part II.,should be a course treating of the mechanical appliances
used for the carrying out of various operations such as disinte-
gration, separation of solid from solid, of liquid from liquid, of
solid from liquid and so on including the six possibilities, filtra-
tion, distillation, in short all the operations which are used in
the manufacturing industries concerned. The point of view
should be and can readily be one of a higher order than has as
yet been attempted. There is no reason whatever why the chem-
ical engineer shall not be aware of the relative stresses on the
various parts of the machines he uses at least to the extent of
having an intelligent appreciation of the mutual relation of the
parts from an engineers point of view so far as a user is concerned,
or why he shall not have a very clear idea as to the efficiency
and the scientific principles upon which the efficiency is based
and measured, or why he shall not be trained in the art of specify-
ing his wants by means of the language of engineers, whether
in the form of drawings or specifications as all technical profes-
sions do. Unfortunately, the chemist is usually, at the outset
of his career, so utterly untrained in this respect that he becomes
the victim of many an unscrupulous dealer in machinery or
huilder of furnaces or other appliances.
With these two parts properly presented it may be hoped to
have acquainted the student with the reactions upon which the
various industries are based and on the other hand the various
mechanical appliances used to carry them out, and it places him
in a position to approach Part III. with the necessary training
and makes it possible to discuss this on a broader basis without
allowing his attention to be detracted by details of reactions or
details of appliances. The basis upon which Part III. should
be treated is essentially economic and should treat essentially
