ZUZAMMENFASSUNG
INTRODUCTION
The advantages of using systematic air photo-interpretation
techniques for medium and small scale soil mapping are well known. It
is also widely accepted that the utility of photo-interpretation techniques
for soil mapping decreases with increasing scales. However, very little
published information is available on the exact degree of utility of photo
interpretation for large scale soil mapping.
In India large scale soil maps are generally prepared using
cadastral maps as bases; their scales generally range between 1:2 000 and
1:79 2 0. These were utilised as they were readily available and could be
conveniently used for delineations of soil phases of even small areal extent,
though it was fully realized that they offered no clues for the accurate
drawing of soil boundaries. Recently, air photos in scales of 1:15,000 or
1:25,000 have been introduced for detailed soil mapping. These photos are
simply used as base maps. It was considered worthwhile to test the
degree of applicability of systematic aerial photo-interpretation techniques
for large scale soil mapping and hence this study was undertaken. It
should be mentioned that the term "Large scale soil mapping" as used here,
roughly corresponds to the soil mapping done under "Detailed Soil Surveys".
STUDY AREA
The study area for this work comprised a part of the Surhi sub-
catchment of the Mahanadi catchment. It is located between 80°2'30° to
81°13'E latitudes and 21°2 , 30° to 21°40'N longitudes and covers an area
of 17,750 ha. in Khairagarh Tehsil of Drug District in Madhya Pradesh in
India. The climate is typical of the tropical monsoon regions; the mean
annual rain-fall is 951 mm., the greater part of which is received during
the monsoon period of June to September. The mean annual temperature is
