we made in various disciplines over test-sites placed in the
Italian Peninsula.
TEST AREAS IN THE ITALIAN PENINSULA
Since the starting of our R.S. programme in 1970 the fol
lowing test areas have been established
1) Phlegrean Fields (West of Neaples)
2) Vesuvius Volcano
3) Aeolian Archipelago (Lipari, Salina, Stromboli and Volcano
islands) and N.E. Sicily shore
4) Etna Volcano
5) Adige river valley
6) West Milan Padana valley ( between Sesia and Ticino rivers)
7) Brenta river valley.
The data over these test areas were obtained:
a) from space platforms by:
1 - ERTS-1
2 - SKYLAB
b) from airborne devices by:
1 - Mono and multichannel scanners (EMI and DAEDALUS)
2 - Mono and multicamera photographic facilities
(Zeiss and Hasselblad)
c) from ground positioned stations by:
1 - Thermocameras and thermoscanners ( AGA - BARNES )
2 - Photographic equipments
3 - Thermal and emissivity measurements of different kind.
No b) data were analyzed without c) connection, no a)
data were analyzed without b) connection.
FIELDS OF STUDY
Based on the above mentioned facilities the following
arguments were and are topics of our studies:
a) volcanic environments with special reference to thermal
behaviour of historically active volcanoes.
b) Vegetative canopy in particular areas such as Etna slo
pes, Adige river valley etc. with special interest to
the study of the vegetation as a trasfer function between
the chemistry of the soil and the reflectivity of green cover.
