Abstract The author mentions a number of past achievements : the atlas of Roman cen-
turiations in Tunis, the compilation of a bibliography, the raising of general interest etc. At
present the manifold activities of amateurs as well as all kinds of regional studies are being
incorporated in a nationwide scheme that comprises the systematic archaeological interpre
tation of the complete photo coverage of France on medium scale.
The first step in the historical reconstruction of an area is a survey of the road system. Further
activities consist of compiling archaeological series by means of comparative morphology. The
result of this may be a relative chronology. This relative chronology may be made absolute
by the introduction of historical data or by means of special archaeological methods of dating.
Results of these investigations are published in a number of periodicals. Finally, the training
of interpretation specialists and the desirability of international cooperation in the field of
aerial archaeology are mentioned.
Résumé L’auteur fait mention d’un nombre d’expériences préliminaires: l’atlas des cen-
turiations romaines de Tunisie, constitution d’une bibliographie, information du public, etc.
Aujourd’hui les multiples activités d’amateurs et les études régionales sont intégrées dans un
plan de base national reposant sur l’interprétation systématique de la couverture métropoli
taine à moyenne échelle.
Le relevé de l’ancien réseau routier est la première étape de la reconstitution historique d’un
terroir. Ensuite on s’efforce de constituer des séries archéologiques par morphologie comparée.
Les chronologies relatives en resultant sont transformées en chronologies absolues par intro
duction de données empruntées à l’histoire générale ou à la vérification archéologique sur le
terrain.
Les résultats des recherches sont diffusés par présentation dans un nombre de publications.
Enfin la formation des spécialistes de l’interprétation et la collaboration internationale sont
mentionnées.
Zusammenfassung Der Verfasser erwähnt einige bisherige Ergebnisse, u.zw. : den Atlas
der römischen Centuriationen in Tunis, die Zusammenstellung eines Literatur-Verzeich
nisses, Fragen allgemeinen Interesses, etc. Die vielseitige Tätigkeit von Liebhabern, sowie
regionale Studien sind heute in Form einer nationalen Planung zusammengefasst, welche auf
systematischer Interpretation der Luftbild-Bedeckung Frankreichs in mittlerem Masstabe
beruht.
Die Aufnahme des alten Verkehrsnetzes bildet den ersten Schritt in der geschichtlichen Wie
derherstellung eines Gebietes. Weiter wird versucht die archäologische Entwicklung mittels
vergleichender Morphologie zu entziffern. Die sich daraus ergebenden relativen Chronologien
werden, nach Berücksichtigung der geschichtlichen Daten oder durch Geländeproben in ab
solute Chronologien umgearbeitet.
Die Ergebnisse werden in einer Anzahl Schriften veröffentlicht. Schliesslich wird die Aus
bildung von Spezialisten für Interpretation, sowie die Notwendigkeit internationalen Zusam
menwirkens erwähnt.
Après les travaux du R. P. Poidebard et du Colonel Baradez, la première
expérience systématique française fut réalisée à l’Institut Géographique Natio
nal en 1953-54 pour 15.000 clichés de la couverture tunisienne dont l’inter
prétation donna naissance à VAtlas des centuriations romaines de Tunisie. Au cours
