AIR PHOTOGRAPHS AND THE STUDY OF ANCIENT FIELDS 
IN ENGLAND

Abstract Ancient agriculture, from earliest times to the Middle Ages, can best be ap 
proached through the study of ancient fields, which in large areas involves a consideration 
of the whole problem of settlement pattern. Both vertical and oblique air photographs con 
stitute the most effective means of carrying out these studies. The author distinguishes four 
operations in which air photographs are used : 
1. the search for ancient fields on existing photographs or by direct observation from an aero 
plane. In the latter case remains will be photographed when recognised. 
2. the analysis; field types are distinguished and their relationships examined. 
3. the representation on plans of large areas. 
4. the presentation; air photographs can illustrate intricate patterns, sometimes almost im 
possible to represent on plans. 
Although air photographs cannot replace work on the ground they are the most essential factor 
which enables this study of ancient fields to be adequately made at all. 
Résumé C’est par l’étude des anciens champs que l’on peut le mieux approcher les pro 
blèmes de l’agriculture ancienne de son origine au Moyen Age. Cette étude exige sur de 
grandes superficies la prise en considération du problème tout entier du réseau de coloni 
sation. Les photographies aériennes, tant oblique que verticales, constitutent les moyens les 
plus efficaces de mener à bien ces recherches. L’auteur distingue quatre opérations différentes 
dans lesquelles des photographies aériennes sont utilisées. 
1. La recherche d’anciens champs sur des photographies existantes ou par observation directe 
depuis un avion. Dans ce dernier cas, les vestiges seront photographiés sitôt qu’ils auront 
été identifiés. 
2. Vanalyse; distinction des divers types de champs et examen de leurs corrélations. 
3. la représentation de grandes étendues sur des cartes. 
4. la présentation; les photographies aériennes peuvent illustrer des systèmes compliqués parfois 
impossibles à cartographier. 
Bien que les photographies aériennes ne puissent pas remplacer le travail de terrain, elles 
constituent néanmois le facteur de base primordial et irremplaçable permettant cette étude des 
anciens champs. 
Zusammenfassung Antike Landwirtschaft, von frühesten Zeiten bis zum Mittelalter, 
kan am besten ermittelt werden durch das Studium der Felder, das in ausgedehnten Gebieten 
eine Berücksichtigung des ganzen Problèmes des Siedlingsmusters einschliesst. Luftbilder, 
sowohl Vertikal- als Schräg-Aufnahmen, stellen die wirksamsten Hilfsmittel dar zur Durch 
führung dieses Studiums. 
Der Verfasser unterscheidet vier Phasen der Forschung, in welchen Luftbilder Anwendung 
finden. 
1. Die systematische Suche nach ehemaligen Feldern in vorhandenen Luftbilden oder durch 
directe Beobachtung vom Flugzeug aus. Im letzteren Falle werden erkannte Spuren 
photographiert. 
2. Die Analyse; Typen von Feldern werden unterschieden und ihrer Verwandtschaft unter 
sucht. 
3. Die Kartenaufnahme ausgedehnter Gebiete. 
4. Die Darstellung; Luftbilder können komplizierte Muster illustrieren, welche sonst fast un 
möglich wiedergegeben werden können. 
Obzwar Luftbilder die Geländearbeit nicht ersetzen können, so bilden sie doch den aller 
wichtigsten Faktor der diese Studien überhaupt auf angemessene Weise ermöglicht.
