grazing angles used in 1983/84 resulted in excellent 
discrimination capabilities between various crop 
types especially potatoes. The accuracy obtained 
exceeded 90% for most test sites [Ref. 6, 7]. 
Clearly, crop monitoring by airborne microwave 
campaigns is not the ultimate solution. With the 
advent of European and other satellite systems that 
carry microwave sensors for land applications, these 
airborne (semi-)operational programmes will become 
largely obsolete due to the multitemporal and the 
synoptic characteristics of spaceborne systems. 
The presentation of this symposium paper will in 
clude the results of the 1985 campaign as well as a 
discussion on optimum parameters for future 
satellite simulation campaigns.
