An analytical system can be converted to a hybrid system by 
installing, e.g., digital CCD cameras, a fast storage device for 
images, fast communication lines, image processors, and an image 
display monitor (figure 4).

Digital systems include an autonomous (external) scanner/digitizer 
for AD conversion of full images with a fast mass-storage device. 
Their main components are fast communication lines, fast image 
processors, and preferably a high-resolution image display monitor 
(figure 5). They contain a minimum of the mechanical and optical
